GUIDE TO RHINOPLASTY (AESTHETIC NOSE SURGERY

What is RHINOPLASTY?
In Latin; a medical term meaning ‘shaping of the nose’. With an internal/closed or open /external approach, it is possible to reach to internal and external nasal structures. General anesthesia is preferred in most cases.

Our nose, apart from functioning as moisturing/heating/smelling the air that we breathe, is very noticeable, centrally located on our face that is very complex and differs from one person to another. Internal/external nasal structure is affected by factors due to congenital conditions or trauma later in life. Internal nasal (bone and cartilage) structure deformities or sinus-soft tissue problems, allergy etc. symptoms may cause difficulty in breathing. Also, a deviation in external appearance of the nose and nasal tip deformation can also cause serious difficulty in breathing.

A rhinoplasty procedure as part of an aesthetic surgery can be an alternative for patients with an unpleasant facial appearance due to deformation of the nose, but many such patients also suffer functional problems (difficulty in breathing) so the operation is planned with all these factors that is taken into consideration. Some patients may not be aware of difficulty in breathing, the problem may be observed during nasal examination. Internal/external nasal deformities and facial structure that cause difficulty in breathing are critical factors in planning a rhinoplasty surgery.

From an aesthetic point of view: a deviation or deformation in nasal dorsum, an asymmetry, deformation on nasal tip, a nostril asymmetry, a very large or small nose, a short or long nose, or a too elevated/depressed nasal tip structure are such possible issues for thinking rhinoplasty. There can be also a case where a previously has been operated patient, may need a revision rhinoplasty for refining. General health issues, age, psychological factors and expectations are important topics that need to be evaluated before surgery.

Surgical approach: Dr. Altindağ M.D.’s personal preference, with patients having problems with nose tip; Open (external) rhinoplasty approach (generally). A small cut is made through the nostrils, elevating (lifting) the tissues above cartilage and bone. This will allow to determine the nasal problems for a comfortable operation which is a major benefit of this approach. Correctly determining the nasal problems through the open rhinoplasty approach will highly raise the success rate and will lower the risk of a revision rhinoplasty. If the nose tip does not need any significant refinement and has little or no problems; Closed (internal) rhinoplasty approach is preferred.

Are you a (suitable) candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Before deciding on the procedure, it is very important to determine whether you are psychologically ready for surgery;

- Physically and mentally healthy
- Mature, respectful
- At peace with herself/himself, happy
- Good, strong social relationships with family members, friends
- Not too rigorous, with realistic expectations.

Individuals that carry these specifications can be considered psychologically suitable for rhinoplasty. Otherwise, if the patient has unrealistic expectations that are exaggerated beyond the boundaries of the procedure, the outcome will be less pleasing. Please, be sure that, Dr. Altindağ will carefully plan and perform to best of his skill with experience to correct the problems about nose tip, nasal ridge, side angle, side length etc. When deformity areas are more than one, Dr. Altindağ will focus on correcting firstly the main aspect that bothers the patient most, while He refines the other aesthetic and functional problems.

Dr. Altindag’s Philosophy on Rhinoplasty
Every nose and facial structure is different and unique. Personal thought behind this operation, would be to get success with a fully functioning nose, good breathing capacity and a natural looking (seems untouched) appearance within the proportions of your face (harmony with your face) that will make you happy. It is important to remember not to push the surgical boundaries and also follow a non-radical (conservative)approach during surgery.

To raise the success rate and increase post-operative comfort
How do you achieve a beautiful looking nose after the operation? If the patient has realistic expectations and if the surgery is performed by an rhinoplasty expert, the outcome will be very successful and patient satisfaction will be higher. As an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon, Dr. Altındağ will share his aesthetic philosophy and point of view along with the wishes and expectations of his patients during consultation. Then, He will combine both views to create the most desired and successful outcomes.

Appointment and Consultation
A detailed analysis of the nose/face, face pictures, internal/external nasal examination (and ENT) gathering information from the patient, going over the important aspects, and recommendations are key factors that complete the process. (Patients who are living abroad or outside Istanbul, They can get some information for an online consultation).

A document called; Advices Before and After Rhinoplasty will be given to you (or, via e-mail) after consultation. Please take time to read and review this form. The recovery period after the operation, after every week and month, will continue as the swelling will gradually decrease. This period will be different for each patient. In the initial months, the nose sometimes may not be fully visible or may not be symmetric due to the swelling underneath the skin. You need to be patient during this period, and follow recommendations for your nose.

Success Rate and Risks of Surgery
Success rate is approximately 95%. As with every operation, rhinoplasty carries some risks/unwanted complications such as enfection, bleeding, non-permanent problems with skin/internal tissue etc. (between % 1-2) may rarely happen. It is much more uncommon for these problems or other problems related to anesthesia to be permanent. Advices given to the patient before and after the operation will highly eliminate these complications.
